Workshops & Seminars
It is important for people to know more about the unique bioregion we inhabit.
For this reason, we periodically coordinate or present workshops and seminars regarding various topics that are of importance, especially to local residents.
If you have interest in attending a future workshop, or would like further information, please contact us at researchranch@audubon.org.
Past Events
The Fall 2007-Spring 2008 Potlucks and Presentations series at the Research Ranch was a resounding success. The season began with a talk by Linda Kennedy describing an Audubon program dedicated to assisting people living in rural Arizona to coexist with their local environment. Next, Michael Wilson, of Drylands Institute, gave us a very entertaining talk on the wonders of Sonora, Mexico, where the juxtaposition of mountains, deserts, and the Sea of Cortez result in a wonderful diversity of flora and fauna. In February, Diane Austin from the University of Arizona gave a very informative talk about sustainable practices such as rainwater harvesting, composting toilets, and alternative building techniques that are helping raise the quality of life in Nogales, Sonora. Michael Wilson returned in March to talk about the myriad ways in which plants defend themselves from herbivores. Animal chemical defenses were among the subjects when Chris Hass presented a talk on the 4 species of skunks that inhabit southeastern Arizona. She also talked about rabies in skunks and other mammals, and how to reduce potential exposures. Our potluck season ended with Kendall Kroesen, from Tucson Audubon, talking about techniques to modify our landscaping to reduce water use and take advantage of our limited rainfall.
In addition to entertaining and informative presentations, we also shared wonderful food and conversation. We hope you will join us for the 2008-2009 season.
