John Briggs is a Professor of Life
Sciences and a plant ecologist at Arizona State University.
He earned his B.S. (1978) and M.S. (1980) from Pittsburg State
University and Ph.D. (1985) from the University of Arkansas.
He held research and academic positions at Kansas State University
(Division of Biology and Department of Geography) from 1985
to 1999 and has been at Arizona State University (ASU) since
1999. He was program director of the Ecology program at the
National Science Foundation (1998-1999), Founding Director

Head of Plant Biology at ASU (2002-2003) and was a Charles
Bullard Fellow at Harvard University (2005-2006).
His current research interests are at
the interface of Ecosystem and Landscape Ecology. He has been
involved with the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program
at Konza Prairie since 1985 and a co-PI on that project since
1990. Since his move to ASU, he has expanded his research
program to include a new emphasis on the importance of human
activities as drivers of ecological processes and patterns.
This work centers on the CAP-LTER program and the IGERT program
in Urban Ecology at ASU. In addition, he has began an collaboration
with archaeologists in order to study the legacy of prehistoric
and modern human land use in the newly designated Agua Fria
National Monument north of the Phoenix basin.
Currently he is interim co-Director of
the Central Arizona-Phoenix LTER project, a study of the Phoenix
metropolis and surroundings that is one of the first comprehensive
investigations of an urban ecosystem. In that role, Briggs
oversees and coordinates interdisciplinary research in urban
ecology involving over 100 scientists in more than 10 departments.
He has served on numerous advisory panels and review teams
for the National Science Foundation, other federal agencies
and numerous international programs. He is a member of the
editorial board for the Journal of Landscape Ecology, the
publication committee of the Ecological Society of America
and serves on the review board of the Audubon Appleton-Whittell
Research Ranch and the MacArthur Agro-Ecology Research Center.
