Research Ranch Advisory Team
Dr. Christine Hass grew up in a
small town in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada, where a love
of nature and an insatiable curiosity propelled her to a career
in biology. She headed north for schooling, completing Bachelor’s
and Master’s degrees in zoology at the University of
Montana and a Ph.D. in biology at the University of North
Dakota. Her education and research have focused on mammal
ecology and behavior, and she has published more than a dozen
articles in scientific journals. She also reviews articles
for numerous scientific publications, and has served on the
committees of several graduate students. Her current research
interests include community ecology and reproductive strategies
of coatis and skunks. Among her many tasks as Assistant Director
of the Appleton-Whittell Research Ranch, she also lists developing
inventory and monitoring methods for carnivores using track
surveys and remote cameras; coordinating the Monitoring Avian
Production and Survivorship (MAPS) programs at Las Cienegas
National Conservation Area and the Research Ranch, finding
ways to help people get along with their wild neighbors, participating
in the Christmas Bird Count, and developing databases and
maintaining the computer systems at the ranch. In her spare
time, she enjoys hiking, backpacking, and lying around on
secluded beaches.
